P.R.E.P creating

For three weeks, the Paper Plus room and others did P.R.E.P. We were put into groups and then we had to choose what to make. My group made bracelets with twisty wire and initialed beads and I had an idea to twist some fake gems onto the wire and it ended up pretty good. They were sold very quickly actually, so the only ones left were the ones that were pre-ordered. The piggy bank mache group sold their pigs for 15 dosh and still sold quicker than us. Prep was awesome and fun!  From Diana

Canada Celebration!

Yesterday, two Canadians came to our class for our celebration of reaching a smiley face, in Canada on our 'Where In The World' map. Their names are Dan and Gabriel. The first thing they did was put us into groups, make us find a spot in the classroom (in our groups) and gave us a twenty question quiz about Canada. The group that won was called 'The Bubble-Devils'. They got lots of prizes. Next the boys went with Dan to make blueberry waffles with real maple syrup! YUUUUUMMMMYY! After we had all had three pieces, we went with Gabriel to make juggling balls. We made three each. Finally, at the end of the day, we all received a Canada pencil.

Random Recycled Rewards!

This morning, when school started, two people received a Random Recycled Reward. Jess Lima and Jacob Hughes both received a Random Recycled Reward after climbing Te Maunga O Panekiretanga (The Mountain Of Excellence) for the fourth time! Jacob picked what appears to be a drink cooler. You put it in the freezer and the liquid contained in the side of the glass freezes and you can pour drinks into it and it keeps them cool. Jess picked a fake fish. You put it in water and it has a plastic bubble with air in it so that it floats.
Here is a picture of Jacob with his Random Recycled Reward.

'Senses' Poems

Yesterday room 16 published some 'senses' poems on the computers in the library. Here are some of them.

The Football Match

Thousands of fans pack the stadium,
My teammates yell for the ball and our fans scream louder,
Nervousness creeps over me and I start to panic,
I taste the moist air,
The scent of the freshly mown grass fills my nostrils
And I pass the ball.
By Oskar

The sand in between my toes as

I run along the beach.
A big boat
in the distance.
CRASH, BANG the waves
Hit the rocks.
Dad is making burgers
On the bbq.
The taste of dad’s
Burgers are the best.

Christchurch Music Festival

Christchurch is having a super doper music festival!!! And guess who’s in it? Of course it’s me the class blogger of the week, Molly. I am also part of the Ashburton borough choir group. Being part of choir means that you get to go to the Ashburton music festival, that’s where all the Ashburton schools sing as one big group. In the Christchurch music festival we sing as one big group too but this is very special because, Ashburton borough is the only Ashburton School that sings in it.

The performance is on TONIGHT!!!!!!!!! I am so nervous, I have a whole swarm of butterflies in my stomach.

As they say the show must go on, so I guess it means i cant back down now.

Your class blogger,

Molly

Karaoke Party!

We have made a great discovery this week... the website Karaoke Party! It is great fun to sing karaoke in class... great for our reading skills and tests our ability to keep in time and on tune! So far we have mostly been rated 'tone deaf' but twice we made it to 'amateur' status.

Here's a video of some students who wanted to have another go after the bell had rung and everyone else had gone home for the day:

Our advertising book

For our inquiry about how 'symbols of popular culture are used to persuade us' we are looking at advertising. We brainstormed strategies that advertisers use for static advertising. Then we went on a hunt for examples, in magazines and newspapers. Here's what we came up with! Click on the picture... then press the little arrow in the bottom right corner to turn the page!

Tricks of advertising

It's time to get smart when it comes to advertising! Some of these videos might be a little old but the tricks they show are still used... Click on the title and it should take you to the video.

Food advertising tricks!

Fast Food: compare the picture on the ad to a picture of the real thing.

Are those toys really as cool as they look on TV?

Are you a pepsi or coke fan? Do they really taste that different? Maybe you like one or the other because of the advertising and marketing...not because of the taste difference. Have a look at this experiment: Pepsi or Coke?

When you have watched the videos, post a comment explaining one thing you have learned or something that surprised you from the video. Make sure you leave your name on the comment.

Slippery Science

Yesterday room 16 students made slime & flubber.

The slime was made using Cornflour, Water & Colouring. Only the African flight crew got it right.

The flubber used pva glue, Borax,Water & colouring. Again, only the Africans got it correct.

It took all afternoon to make. It was an oowey gooey mess. Here are some photos & videos of what we had done.

Mad machines!

We had three Canadians visit us for an afternoon. They told us a bit about Canada and did an activity with us called Mad Machines. It was fun pretending to be a mad machine assembly line... when Steph cranked up the machines they went faster and faster until they exploded! Have a look at the videos and photos!

Tyler's gone!

We said goodbye to a great student last week. Tyler has moved to Lincoln and we will miss him! We have been thinking of him since the big earthquake hit, hoping he is ok. I guess he's had a few days off school! On his last day we had a party at lunch time. Some of the boys turned up the music and had a bit of a dance. Check out Jacobs moves in the video

Persuasive Speeches

The time has come for .... drum roll.... the school speech competition. This year speeches need to be persuasive. The theme for the year 5/6s is 'Healthy Lifestyle Choices'. Every speech needs to persuade the audience to change or improve their lifestyle.

This term in our class we have been looking at persuasive writing techniques in writing.

We have been looking at our topic of Hauora/ Wellbeing.

NEWSFLASH: There are 20 auction dollars up for grabs for the first person who can comment on the blog telling us what the four aspects of hauora are... I'll give you the trickiest one: taha hinengaro/ emotional wellbeing.

We have been looking at things that contribute to a healthy lifestyle, like good sleep habits (Remember healthy henry and sleepy susan?), exercise and sport, healthy eating, good oral health (remember our adventures in Saving Tooth Kingdom?), spending time with friends and family, knowing our values and our purpose in life and dealing with our emotions well.

I can't wait to hear your speeches on one of these aspects! Good luck finishing writing them and start practising your presentation in front of the mirror. Remember the things we will be evaluating (on the rubric you created).

Here are some photos to show how we came up with a rubric to evaluate our speeches.
