Artem was a very good and helpful student. But he moved to Mt Somers and we will all miss him in room 16. Artem was one of the smartest people in the class, he was in the second best maths group. (There is only one person in the top group and that's Oskar- he is the smartest in the class). Artem is from the Ukraine. It is near Russia and Belarus.
Welcome to the Ashburton Borough School Room 16 Blog. We are year 5 & 6 students (aged 9-11) and live in Ashburton, New Zealand. We want to share what we're up to with people near and far -please leave us comments! We draft our writing on to this blog, without our teacher correcting it, so hopefully you can understand it even if there are a few mistakes!!

The New Monarch Butterfly
Dannielle & Jacob T.M brought a pupa into School & surprised the class. We hung it on a wall in between 2 pins so that's why we named it pinpin. We waited about 2 weeks. We saw it go from green to black to white. When it was black it was transparent. The next day when we were at the libary it broke free!!!! The butterfly was clinging to the wall. We were so happy. It was bigger than we expected. It was beautiful. We discovered it was a male because it had spots on the insides of it's wings. Some of us were so upset when we set him free because we didn't want him to go. Pin-pin wasn't a very good flyer at first. But eventually he figured it out and flew up to a tree. WAR RESEARCH
Last week for homework we had to find out if we had any people in our family involved in the war (WW1 or WW2). Some people did, Molly made an awesome poster and Liyana made a cool booklet. She didn't even have any people in her family that went to war. Her booklet had a heap of interesting fact's, it also had a poem about WW2. Edwin Stapleton was Molly's great grandad he was in WW2. We did this for homework because it was Anzac day on April 25th.

Room 16's Visual Mihimihis
Yesterday we did art. What we did was Visual Mihimihi. It was fun but all we did was sponging with paint and onto the paper it was kinda boring .Then when we were done we coloured a picture of our faces with crayon. Some boys in our classroom were being silly colouring in the picture.
Now we are also doing our own Mihimihi. I hope the boys aren't being silly again! Before that we did singing. The song was called :Lollypop, shake your tail feather and Mango Walk.
TIME FOR ART!
Yay! We're doing art (Visual Mihimihi).A Visual Mihimihi is art that represents ourselves and our family.

The First Day Back At School
Tuesday 19th April
Yesterday was the first day back at school. The first thing we did was a recount of our holidays. I didn't have enough time to write my story! My favourite things in the holidays were when Caitlin and Scott came and stayed the night with Caleb and I and when Caitlin I and went up to Christchurch in a halls truck with her dad Wayne. This week we have a new journalist and North America is on duty. This week we have to do cross country practice all week. Everyone gets really tired.
By this weeks journalist Tessa. Bye!

Last day of term by Ms Wills
Phew.... our busy Term 1 is over and we all get 2 weeks holiday! I hope any Rm 16 explorers reading this on their breaks have had a great Easter. We had a busy last week of term with lots of new experiences packed into it. Our journalist was so involved in classroom happenings he forgot to update the blog! Our photographer captured some of the action though, so here are some photos.

About 2 weeks ago the class made it to Japan on our 'Where we are in the world map'. It was a celebration destination so on the last day of term we made sushi. YUM! We also read about what it was like to stay in a Japanese home and what lunch time was like in Japanese schools. Room 16 had a great couple of weeks and have already moved on from Japan to Beijing, Ulan Bataar in Mongolia and then to another Chinese city. GO ROOM 16!!

The last day of term was sadly the last day at Borough School for Peter- a fun and friendly year 6 student who is now off to Invercargill. We will miss him! The students decided we needed to throw a surprise party for him - he was definitely surprised!! At lunch time we ate lots of food that everyone had brought- and our sushi of course! Some of the students had a lot of fun dancing to the music... on their heads! Others had a big pillow fight. It was chaos in the classroom and I thought it was fabulous :-) You'll notice that is was mufti day too- no uniforms!

The last day finished off with our Auction. The students were given 'auction dollars' for great work, behaviour etc. The more auction dollars they had of course the more they were able to buy at our auction. On auction were lots of beautiful things from Japan- the fans proving very popular. Also some things donated from Air New Zealand- like model planes and first class travel bags with toothpaste, eye mask, lip gloss, socks etc. There were also lots of Easter eggs and some timestables bookmarks and random other things. The bidding at times was quite fierce- everyone came away with something they were happy with in the end. Here's the class waiting for the auction to start. The other photo is Peter with his eye mask and black scarf with sumo wrestlers on it!

See you in 2 weeks for more Room 16 happenings: on and off-line!
